A lot can change in a year, especially when it comes to your health and wellness. Annual physical exams play a vitally important role in helping you maintain your health throughout every stage of life. By keeping a record of your health year after year, it's much easier to spot changes that can indicate the early stages of a disease or medical condition. Annual physicals also include important screenings and tests to spot diseases as well as guidance to help you lead the healthiest lifestyle possible.
Your exam will begin with a complete personal and family medical history to look for risk factors and provide an overall view of your health and your lifestyle habits. During the exam itself, your weight and blood pressure will be recorded and your heart and lungs will be evaluated to look for the presence of diseases or conditions like arrhythmias, asthma, COPD or other issues. Your reflexes may be evaluated, and your abdomen and belly will be palpated (felt) to look for signs of inflammation or tenderness that could indicate a medical problem. You may have a clinical breast exam or a prostate exam, depending on your needs. Additional testing like blood work or urinalysis may also be ordered. And of course, you'll receive guidance regarding steps you should take to address acute or chronic issues and lead a healthier life overall.
